What is

Phlebectomy Treatment

In contrast to deep vein issues, some varicose veins are located close to the surface of the leg and can be treated with a phlebectomy, which is a minally invasive technique that involves physically removing the superficial varicose veins with a specialized hook.

When performed on patients who are a good candidate for the treatment, phlebectomy of varicose veins has a very high success rate. The procedure is performed with local anesthesia, and patients seldom feel any pain during or after the treatment.

The incisions made during the treatment are typically so minor that stitches are not even necessary. After the procedure, the leg is bandaged with a comfortable gauze or compression wrap to ensure proper healing.

Post-procedure requirements

Following the procedure, you must wear a graduated compression stocking. This will need to be worn most of the time for 2 to 3 weeks following your procedure. You must avoid vigorous exercise for 2 weeks after the procedure, however, you can resume most regular activity the next day as long as you wear compression stockings. Make sure to inform your doctor of your lifestyle and activity levels to ensure a smooth recovery.

How is a phlebectomy carried out?

Typically, this is done as an outpatient procedure. Compared to a surgical operation with larger incisions, there is typically less recovery time following a phlebectomy. Rarely, some patients need to be admitted following the treatment to ensure proper healing.
